News - Olivier Awards Nominations 2019

The nominations have been announced for this year's Oliviers, UK theatre's most prestigious awards...

This year, musicals were a hit as the revival of Company and new work Come From Away tied for the most nominations with nine apiece, while The Inheritance pulled in eight nominations, the most of any play. All three also go head to head in the Best Director category, alongside newly revived play Summer & Smoke and The Lehman Trilogy, a new play directed by Sam Mendes, who you may know better for his big screen work on films like Skyfall and Jarhead.

Talking of films, it's nice to see the stage adaptation of A Monster Calls getting 3 nods, as well as some classics such as The King and I, which got 6 nominations.

There are more names among the nominees that you may be familiar with from their screen work, rather than their stage work, like Ken Watanabe, Vanessa Redgrave, Gillian Anderson, Sophie Okonedo and David Suchet.

And then you get absolute doyennes of both stage and screen, like the marvellous Patti LuPone and Sir Ian McKellen, who deserve every award they are ever nominated for.

As well as the competitive award nominations, a few days before the main nominations were publicised, Sir Matthew Bourne OBE was announced as the recipient of this year’s Special Award, in recognition of his extraordinary achievements in dance.

Hailed by many as the UK’s most successful living choreographer and director, Bourne has created and directed dance for musicals, theatre and film for 30 years, receiving numerous international accolades including seven Olivier Awards. This Special Award will be Bourne’s eighth Olivier Award, making him joint holder of the most ever Olivier Awards, alongside Judi Dench.

Kenny Wax, President of the Society of London Theatre, said of Bourne's award, "Matthew has transformed the landscape of dance in this country and across the globe with his bold, innovative and popular work, loved by audiences around the world."

You can watch the full nominations broadcast, made online yesterday by last year's winners Sheila Atim and Giles Terera below.

The Olivier Award winners are announced Sunday 7 April at the Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Jason Manford.
